（名） 1. 理由・根拠 = cause / ground 　2. 理性・分別

◎「1. 理由・根拠」の意味では、reason for 〜/ reason to do / reason (why / that) + SV の形で使う。特に reason (why / that) + SV の表現は、why / that が省略された reason + SVの形で整序問題に頻出する。

・ There is no reason for believing it.

　＝ There is no reason to believe it.

　「それを信じる根拠は何もない」

・ The reason (why / that) I am late is that my car broke down.

　「私が遅刻したのは車が故障したからです」

【注意】

（×）The reason is because ...という表現はしない。

（○）The reason is that ...が正しい言い方。これも英作文で受験生がよく間違う盲点。

◎「2. 理性・分別」の意味では次の表現に注意。

・ lose one's reason ⇔ regain one's reason

　「理性を失う」　 ⇔「理性を取り戻す」

【覚えよう】

　reasonable ( = logical / rational ) の意味は、次に続く（名）によって訳し方がずいぶん変わるので注意しよう。

・ a reasonable explanation「筋の通った説明」

・ at a reasonable price「手頃な値段で」

・ a reasonable number of people「かなり多くの人々」

　⇔unreasonable = out of reason「理にかなわない・不合理な」

◆ respect

（動） 1. 尊敬・尊重する

（名） 2. 伝言・あいさつ 　3. 点　 4. 関係・関連

◎「1. 尊敬・尊重する」の意味では次の表現をまとめておこう。

・ respect A= look up to A ⇔ despise = look down on A

　「 A を尊敬する」 ⇔「 A を軽蔑する」

◎「2. (よろしくという) 伝言・あいさつ」= regard

　 この意味ではone's respects（＝複数形）の形になることに注意しよう。

・Give my ( best ) respects [regards] to your parents.

　「ご両親によろしくお伝えください」

　＝ Remember me to your parents.

　＝ Say hello to your parents.

◎「3. 点」＝ regard / way。この意味では可算名詞に扱う。

・in this [that] respect「この [その] 点で」

・in some [all] respects「いくつか [すべて] の点で」

（注）×in this point という言い方はしない。 at this point は英語としては正しいが「この時点で・この地点で」という意味で使われるのが普通。

※「関係・関連」＝ relation 。この意味では不可算名詞に扱う。

・ in respect of 〜＝ with respect to 〜「〜に関して」

・ without respect to 〜「〜にかまわずに・〜を考慮せずに」

【覚えよう】

・ respectable「尊敬に値する・尊敬できる・立派な」

・ respectful「尊敬の念に満ちた・礼儀正しい・丁重な」

・ respective「それぞれ・各自の」

・ respectively 「それぞれに」

◆ right

（形） 1. 正しい　 2. 右の　 3. 適切な

（副） 4. 正しく 　5. 右に 　6. まったく・ずっと 　7. ちょうど

（名） 8. 正義　 9. 権利

　right は様々な意味をとる代表的な多義語なので特に重要な用法は例文で確認しよう。

◎「3. 適切な」= proper / appropriate

・ He is the right person for the job. 「彼はその仕事にうってつけの人物だ」

◎「6. まったく」= completely／「ずっと」= all the way

・Go right on until you reach the park.

「公園に着くまでずっとそのまま行きなさい」

◎「7. ちょうど」は、時や位置を表す前置詞・副詞の前で使われる。

・ He brought a chair right next to hers. 「彼は自分の椅子を彼女のすぐ隣へ持ってきた」

・right across the street [ under the table / above the head ] 「ちょうど通りを横切ったところに[ 机の真下に / まさに頭上に ]」

◎「9. 権利」 ⇔ duty「義務」ともに入試頻出単語。

・You have a right to demand an explanation. 「君には説明を求める権利がある」

・ right away「すぐに」= right now / at once / immediately

・ Keep right「右側通行」

・ right angle「直角」　

・ right-handed「右利きの」⇔ left-handed「左利きの」
